Animation Dump!!!!

Some more animation. The head chop thing I did a few months ago for fun. The Cowboy shooting the fly I did tonight. The punch line is another cowboy comes from OS at the end and is full of holes. HAHA stupid cowboys. Still have to animate that...The last animation I don't remember when I made... but its a copy of a richard williams sneak walk

This is the Def Leppord Pour Sugar on me song. I just love the weird trippyness in the beginning.

A new approach - Speed Animation

I have been playing around with how to approach a scene. I did all this animation *about 15 seconds* in an hour and 1/2 hour as a challenge to myself. This is how I approached it.

1. make coffee - i wanted to be awake for straight ahead animation.

2. Use a design - i wanted a character i was familiar with.

3. Audio - Listen to the audio about 15 times in a row, really thinking about it in my head and understanding what i wanted to do. This was the new part for me and I think it really helped.

4. Do it straight ahead on 1's in flash. Don't even listen to the audio cause you know whats going to happen. concentrate on the drawing.

5. Just draw the big shapes. Don't stop and go back to clean up drawings. If he goes off model keep going! screw it! you might find he changes for the better. Its so lose when you clean it up you can make it right.

6. after finishing the drawing go back and retime it and fix camera moves. I was drawing him way off the frame but didn't care cause its so easy to fix in flash.

Thoughts:
Well it was a fun experiment. Some parts of how i approached it arn't the best way to do animation. This scene could of worked well doing pose to pose for the walk cycle and cycle the animation... I like how the ending turned out though. When I do this again I would defiantly work on 2's instead of 1's. I thought might capture more energy on 1's but it really slowed me down and I had to delete a lot of drawings. I found that sitting down and REALLY concentrating on the music was helpful.

Let me know what you thought? I plan on cleaning him up and refining the animation.
any suggestions would be great.

These are some drawings from my sketchbook and my Chinese Junk/Spanish Galleon ship design. I really like the face expressions for the top guy. Its fun to just draw cartoony, wacky expressions

GrannyPirate Props

I did this for my prop class at the union. I like how some of the props turned out...especially the trunk/walker for granny pirate. The flag could use some more work and i could push the shapes even more. Kinda bummed the teacher didn't even look at it. Also most of the students in there are creepy...so i usually spend my time drawing them, I'll have to post some of them one day.

Bubble Gum Bandit

This is for a short story I wrote awhile ago, but finally trying to make a board of the idea. Its a really simple story and the focus is on the gags. This is the character design for the bubblegum bandit, the main character. I am happy with this cause its easy/fun to draw, but I want to make him more banditesque. Maybe a scarf to hide his face? some gum in his hair? I just realized i should of given him arm Sleaves.... Let me know what you think?

Jess and I WON!! at the Asifa Student Film Fest.

Jess and I won at the Asifa Student Film Festival!!! It was pretty exciting! We won the Judges award. Our short 'caffeine headache' is about working at Starbucks and figuring out if it is worth dealing with all the craziness. I'll post more on this since it is pretty exciting.

Textures and Brushes

So I reciently discovered "Brushes" on photoshop. OH! i always knew they existed....but the ones i knew where the crappy ones that came with photoshop. I didn't realize their true POWER!!!! until I got some pretty nice ones some prominent concept artists use *not naming names, but they are freakishly good. So I thought I'd try some painting type stuff.

They make painting digitally SOOOOooooOOOoo much more fun!!! makes me wish I had taken a digital painting class instead of learning this the hard way. Instead of painting every lil tree, there is a TREE BRUSH! Instead of fudging around with textures and crap there are cool Texture Brushes! I've always heard about them and seen the results, but never experienced it first hand.

The ghostship i've been working on and tried that quick mask technique. The other two I did in 1/2 an hour. They are pretty sloppy but it was cool to play around with the brushes. I think i might do some more. Right now I'm looking at compositions, stealing from stuff, because i have hardly any experience in this..nothing in the mental vault to draw upon. Anywho let me know what you think?

GhostShip

I am working on this for my Animation Compostions Class at the union. I made it using the quickmask method of painting in photoshop which our teacher Will Weston showed us. It is weird using this method so far, and will probably take a lot of practice to get used to, but so far it is pretty quick. Let me know what you think?

Working on Portfolio

Here is an image I did for an update on my portfolio. Trying to show i can do more "real" stuff, not just cartoony "kid" cartoons *even though this drawing is still pretty cartoony*. Its based on an older drawing I did. Let me know what you think? Yawn..it is late bed time.

HOORAY!! done with my test.

I finished my test finally. Here are some study drawings i did to warm up. The smaller ones are the first ones i did. I would scale them down and push them to the side as I moved a long. You can see how my drawings get more confident over time. Now hopefully I will get the job. HOORAY DENTAL!!!!

I am feeling inspired by two things lately. Roller Derby and Judas Priest. They go hand in hand me thinks. I highly recommend this ridiculous Priest video "Breaking the Law". THEY HOLD UP THE BANK WITH THEIR GUITARS!!!!!! awesome! that kinda silliness is timeless.

Amarok

Amarok. This is a giant wolf which hunts alone, not in a pack. It is a man eater and pretty nasty. The only thing unique about him is it is giant and hunts alone. No tentacles or weird monsteresque things about him....Oh well, not all cryptids are strange i guess.

Altamahaha

The Altamahaha, todays Cryptid. I screwed up the rip cage....also i didn't give this guy flippers, so i don't know how it would steer. Supposedly it is like a giant snake with a horizontal tail like a porpoise. Oh those crazy Cryptids!!!

More goofy drawings

An Ahool is a giant Bat with a Monkey face that makes the noise AHOOOOOOOLLLLLL. It is a cryptid and lives in Indonesia

The second is a short comic i did for a friend making fun of Mosquitor, the goofy He-Man Villian.

YodelGirl

This was based on a drawing Jess did, but i cleaned it up and colored it. I am trying to iron out a process. First drawing in sketchbookpro with the pencil tool. I bring it into Painter which has some great brushes and especially water based brushes. Then i brought it into photoshop to work out the kinks. Still working out my process...the only thing that will get me there is milage/weightlifting.

tiger tiger burning bright

A Tiger drawing for jess. I used the pencil tool in sketchbook pro for it. It felt good, the pencil in sketchbook is really natural feeling. I wish it would register if i am using the side of the pencil....but the quality/grain/opacity of it looks good. I think i might bring this into painter and try doing a wash background and add some watercolor. I was inspired by Peter de Seve and this great step by step process of his work method found on http://garyclair.blogspot.com/ (halfway down the blog)

CINTIQ!!!!

Wow so i finally got my cintiq!!! it is amazing!!! So worth it... I drew a weird cintiq man for some reason and the baron harkonnen from Dune (just finished reading Dune yesterday) I like some parts of him but need to work on my coloring skill, it could be a lot better. It was fun though and with the cintiq I did it in a quarter of the time it normally would take me.

jess quit!!!

Jess quit Starbucks!!~! awesome!

More work Doodles and stupid concept

Where theres a whip theres a way... The first batch were doodles from Rankin Bass' (sure i am spelling it wrong) The Lord of the Rings. I think they were insane to make a movie with such detailed chacter designs, but atleast it was something different. Same can be said for the music, like modern day minstral music.

Wolverine was fun cause i hardly ever draw super heros. When i do it is either Thor, Wolverine or Conan...too much testasterone? yes sir!!! but that is what comics are all about, beating shit up in a manly way.

The last drawing I did in sketchbook pro....wow what a great program. I find it hard to use with a tablet, the cursor is so small it is hard to see....but drawing feels so natural on it and the line looks great. I am still trying to find my process but this guy turned out alright. A stupid concept (Sandninja) but who cares it was fun to draw. I could seriously draw stupid concepts all day...wait...i do.

These are doodles from lunch breaks at work. The last one was when me and some friends watched Cabaret last Saturday. Some really nice shots in that movie!! also great acting, intersting setting and wonderful music...no wonder it won like 26 bizzilion academy awards.

Oldie but Goodie

I did this a few years back but it still makes me laugh. He is ugly and somehow appealing at the same time. I remember drawing it while at my office job in downtown LA. and thinking....man I cannot wait to draw for a living.

RedPancho

I love drawing this simple character I call the Red Pancho. Usually i draw him even simpler and with a hidden face. Thought i would change it up, let me know what you think.
